Needle Bearings Common Sizes

Needle bearings use a roller style rolling element to reduce friction of a rotating surface. Needle Bearings have a high load carrying capacity with a very small cross section height. They are available with or without an inner ring. The needle rollers are guided parallel to the axis using a cage retainer, thrust bearings can also be supplied with no retainer, which is referred to as a full complement of rollers. The Boca Bearing Company specializes in miniature needle bearings.

Needle bearings have a larger surface area that is in contact with the bearing outer surfaces compared to ball bearings. Additionally there is less clearance, or the difference between the diameter of the shaft and the diameter of the bearing, so they are much more compact. The typical structure consists of an inner race (or sometimes merely a shaft), a needle cage which orients and contains the needle rollers, the needle rollers themselves, and an outer race. Needle bearings are heavily used in engine components such as rocker arm pivots, pumps, compressors, and transmissions.

  • Caged and Full Complement Needle B/HK/SCE/TLA

Cage Type needle bearings use a roller style rolling element to reduce friction of a rotating surface. Needle Bearings have a high load carrying capacity with a very small cross section height. The needle rollers are guided parallel to the axis using a cage retainer.

The "S-" denotoes 440C Stainless Steel.

You can find schematics of the HK/SCE/TLA Series caged type needle bearings HERE

  • Needle Thrust Bearing and Washer Series

The Stainless Steel Needle Thrust Bearings and Washer Series are designed for side or axial loads, and cannot handle much radial load at all. The needle can be made from 440C Stainless Steel or 52100 Chrome Steel and the retainer can be made from assorted materials depending on the application. The "S-" denotes 440° Stainless Steel. The NTA part number denotes needle thrust roller, and the TRA is the washer.

  • Cam Yoke Needle Bearings

The Cam Yoke bearing is essentially a roller bearing that is mounted on the end of the arms of the cam yoke. As the camshaft rotates, the cam yoke follows the surface of the cam, and the roller bearing moves along the surface of the cam yoke, converting the rotary motion of the camshaft into linear motion.

  • Cam Follower Needle Bearings

Cam Followers are sometimes known as track followers and can use either rollers or needles as a rolling element. Stud style cam followers use a stud mount to its mating part while the yoke style has a hole through the middle.

A Cam Follower is a type of bearing that follows the surface of a cam, which is a rotating component with an irregular shape. As the cam rotates, the cam follower moves back and forth along its surface, converting the rotational motion of the cam into linear motion. Cam followers are often used in applications where high loads or speeds are present, such as in engines or industrial machinery.
