Research and exploration company that utilizes unmanned robotic underwater roving units, which span the seas mapping and collecting environmental data which is transmitted via satellite for interpretation.

 

Problem and Goal

 

Identifying the correct solution required equally satisfying two different problems. First, the bearings had to survive extremely harsh environmental conditions. Secondly, the bearing had to perform flawlessly and could not require any servicing.

 

 

Bearing Type

 

The submersible design required multiple radial bearings that can withstand the demands of 24/7/365 ocean conditions.

 

Application

 

The Boca Bearings engineer team collaborated with the client’s engineers to use the bearings as a support mechanism and mechanically drive the shaft for the propellers as well as the solar cell collectors that stay on the surface.

 

Outcome

 

After identifying the ideal bearing, Boca Bearings Purchasing team with more than 37 years of experience aligned its vendor community to secure the exact product at volume with consistency and dependable production and distribution.

 

 

Result

 

Working with the mechanical and application engineers an exact match was found for the challenge. The solution was 6908 ZR02 T9 LD Full Ceramic Zr02 bearings with ZR02 races and ZR02 balls.

Impact

 

Working in close partnership, the new bearing assembly provided significantly greater quality, and longevity of life for mission-critical operation which extended in-operation time more than 700%.

 

New Outlook

 

Working under a fully developed procurement and distribution strategy, the strategically chosen global production factories continue to meet the strict criteria for production volume under rigorous quality control standards. With the extended in-operation time, annual bearing expense was reduced by more than 35%.
